Identify your Zone of Genius

Your 'Zone of Genius' refers to the state where you find yourself in total flow, finding ceaseless inspiration and able to produce work that is distinguished and unique, that excels far and beyond what anyone else is doing. When working in your zone of genius you are capitalizing on your natural abilities that are innate rather than learned.

When you first started working for yourself, you likely wore all of the hats within your business - CEO, Finance Director, Head of Marketing, Sales Manager, the whole team was/is you but you probably don't want to continue this long term. In fact, you'll find it unproductive to do so.

By working in your zone of genius, you'll find more joy in your work which naturally brings better results and helps maintain positive wellbeing. Now that you've identified the tasks that fall into this category, it's time to look at what you can delegate...

Delegate and Outsource

Think of outsourcing or making hires as investing in the success of your business. Too many emails or administrative tasks to keep up with? Try hiring a Virtual Assistant. Want to create high-quality marketing around your latest launch? Hire a freelance marketer. Need help figuring out bookkeeping? A bookkeeper on an hourly rate could be the answer.

It can be hard to let go of the reins and trust someone else with parts of your business but think of the freedom it will give you as a business owner and the opportunity for growth it will bring to your business just by hiring an expert in the areas outside of your own expertise. Now you get to propel your business forward by doing what you do best from your zone of genius all the time.

Think of downtime as an investment in productivity

Taking any time off this year has felt a little off-kilter. Christmas is likely the only time this year that we've all committed to taking time off at the same time. As a business owner, it can feel weird to switch off entirely for a long period of time such as Christmas, especially if you're a solopreneur or freelancer.

However, alongside working productively, taking ample downtime is crucial too and can actually majorly boost productivity. Those who are sleep deprived or deprived of ample downtime are found to be less innovative, less productive in their work and tend to take on easier challenges at work than their well-rested counterparts.

Sometimes the simplest and most effective thing you can do for your wellbeing is shifting your perspective towards self-care and rest. The first step to improving your wellbeing as an entrepreneur or freelancer is acknowledging that you're not superhuman. Remember that there are always solutions and people around you to help manage stress and uncertainty when you need it.
