Keeping Your Business Goals Alive in 2020

Undeniably, the last few months have been particularly stressful and draining for those running a business. The last few months have thrown off a lot of our plans for 2020, both personally and professionally. Understandably, many of us have spent our time in survival mode. In these circumstances, it can be hard to maintain the passion that led you to start your business in the first place. The good news is that despite difficult times you can reconnect with that passion, drive and determination that you started the year with.

With that in mind, we want to help inspire and encourage hope in the coming months. When you're ready to step out of survival mode and come up for air, we hope you'll get excited about the things that lie ahead again. And if you're not feeling that way just yet, we hope you feel that excitement about the future soon. To help you to reignite your passion within your business here are some of our tips for approaching your business goals in 2020, old and new.

Review, update and adjust

As business owners we're used to the idea of pivoting and if anything that pivoting muscle of ours has tripled in strength over the last few months. Let's flex that muscle one more time and apply it to staying on track with our business goals.

At least one quarter (if not more) of our year has been totally outside of the norm, resulting in almost all business goals and metrics requiring a mega asterisk by their side. Before getting hasty and ditching those goals altogether, remember those pivot superpowers. The roadmap to making your goals happen can change. Sometimes you just need to review and adjust the goalposts a little. Ask yourself, what makes sense for me to pursue right now? Be realistic about how things might look going forward and brainstorm multiple scenarios then get creative with the solutions that will reconnect you and your team to the vision for 2020.

When in doubt, refer to you 'why'

Call on Simon Sinek's, people don't buy what you do, they buy why you do it principle as a guidepost to help you get to the core of your business mission and goals in the coming months. What matters most to you within your business? Why were your originally 2020 goals so important in the first place? Do they still align with your mission now?

When reflecting on goals and setting new ones we should always be able to answer the 'so what?' question.

Consider:

Why is this goal important to you?

How will your business be better by achieving it?

How will it benefit others?

In other words, so what if you achieve this goal?

Be kind to yourself

In experiencing a global pandemic, we've been offered a humble reminder that we're all human. When you strip back the titles, the accomplishments and the shiny success metrics of our previous lives, we're mostly all just doing our best to live a good life. Some days that means an all guns blazing approach to setting lofty goals and other times it simply means putting one foot in front of the other. So before you do anything, strip back the overwhelm, ditch the unnecessary complications and ask yourself what you really want your business and working life to look like going forward.
